Football Queensland Wide Bay can today confirm the 20-man Wide Bay Select squad for Saturday’s exhibition match against A-League side Brisbane Roar.
The Wide Bay Select side features players from all 11 Wide Bay Premier League sides and will be captained by Bingera FC midfielder Joel Haack.
Also selected from Bingera is Gary O’Donnell, currently second on the Golden Boot race with 44 goals in 20 games.
Runaway league leaders Across the Waves are well represented with defender Dylan Leggett joining midfielders Sam Meyer, Simon Quick and striker Bryce Hibberd in the squad.
Wide Bay Select Head Coach Roger Hunter said the players are looking forward to representing the region against the state’s premier team.
“The preparation has been good, we’ve had two training sessions and the players are very excited,” said Hunter.
“They realise that these opportunities don’t come up too often so they’re looking forward to putting their skills to the test.
“What we’ve tried to do this year with the squad is select a player from every club in the Wide Bay Premier League.
“Our captain is Joel Haack, he’s a six-foot-seven midfield powerhouse, and at the back we’ve got a very classy centre-back in Dylan Leggett.”
General Manager – Central Coast Region Andy Allan said he looked forward to seeing Wide Bay’s finest test themselves against an A-League side.
“It will be terrific to host Queensland’s team Brisbane Roar in the Fraser Coast this week and I know everyone is looking forward to the big game on Saturday,” said Allan.
“We are proud to be able to provide Wide Bay players with this opportunity to play against a professional outfit that is preparing for the upcoming A-League season.
“I have no doubt Saturday’s game will be an unforgettable experience for these 20 players as well as the referees, coaches and the fans.
“On behalf of Football Queensland Wide Bay, I’d like to thank the Roar and Fraser Coast Regional Council for making this event possible.”
Entry to the match is FREE.
